Sidewalkers are a cross between a scooter and a conventional bicycle. They offer the proper amount of impact for fitness training, with more impact than cycling and less impact than running. With a low center of gravity and open architecture, Sidewalkers offer greater freedom of movement than regular bikes, and relief from seat pain. There's no chain or oil to get you dirty, and no derailluer to adjust. Getting on and off is easy, and you can share your Sidewalker with your friends and family, since there's no seat height to adjust. The big wheels allow Sidewalker to go anywhere a regular bike can go. The sport started in Europe and is quickly catching on in the United States.
Can I take both short and long rides?
The German Sidewalker team rode 342 miles in a 24 hour race and 712 miles in a 50 hour race. Another Sidewalker team road 970 miles through the Ural mountains in Russia in just 10 days on snow and gravel covered roads. Whether for long distance touring or short trips to the coffee house and to meet your friends, Sidewalker really performs.
SidewalkerUSA has models for all age groups and riding styles. We offer a road bike, a hybrid bike, a mountain bike, a BMX bike, a folding scooter, and bikes for preschoolers, young kids, and young adults.
What's the proper way to ride?
Most people cruise at 8 to 10 miles per hour. This speed conserves energy and allows time for long glides with both feet raised on the deck. On the downhills, Sidewalker is as fast as conventional bikes. Install a bike computer (about $15) to track your mileage and speed.
Wheel size directly correlates to stability and speed. SidewalkerUSA offers full size bikes with large wheels on both the front and rear. The design allows Sidewalker to go fast and negotiate bumps, potholes and gravel. The riding experience on a Sidewalker mimicks the riding experience on a conventional bike of the same tire size.
What are the fitness benefits?
Sidewalker riding uses a motion similar to cross-country skiing. It utilizes the large muscle groups and is easier on the body than running. The supporting leg uses the anterior thigh muscles, while the kicking leg uses the posterior thigh and calf muscles. Sidewalker also works the hips and buttocks.
Use a helmet, obey local laws, and supervise children. For extra protection, wear elbow and knee pads. Avoid riding down hills, at night or in bad weather. Be mindful of your ground clearance and avoid speed bumps and other road hazards that could cause your scooter to bottom out. Tie your shoelaces short, so they don't contact the quick-release hubs, and check your tire pressure, brakes and quick-release levers before each ride. Replacement brakes, tires, tubes and other parts are available through your local bike shop. As with conventional bikes, we recommend obtaining a professional tune-up and safety inspection.
Can I carry books or groceries?
If you'd like to carry groceries and other small items, attach a standard wire basket (from your local bike shop) in front of the handlebars.
